Building Bridges

My Strategic Advisory Role with Make UK Defence

The UK defence supply chain is full of innovation. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are developing game-changing technologies, manufacturing components with exceptional precision, and offering agile solutions to complex challenges. But too often, they face barriers when trying to engage with the Ministry of Defence (MoD) or major prime contractors.

That’s where Make UK Defence comes in — and where I’m now involved in a strategic advisory role to help shape the new MoD SME Support Centre.

The vision is simple: create clear, practical routes for SMEs to connect with the defence procurement process, bid for work, and deliver solutions. For a small manufacturer in the Midlands producing lightweight armour plating, or a software start-up specialising in secure communications, these opportunities can be transformative — not just for the business, but for the capability of the UK’s armed forces.

My focus is on ensuring that the SME Support Centre isn’t just a signpost, but a genuine platform for progress. That means:

  • Making procurement language and processes understandable for SMEs.
  • Creating networking and collaboration opportunities with MoD decision-makers.
  • Opening channels for innovation to be tested, scaled, and adopted quickly.

It’s work that sits at the intersection of policy, business development, and relationship-building — and it’s incredibly rewarding to see the groundwork forming for something that could change the game for smaller businesses in the defence sector.
